Q

Different generations of the AGM-114

A

B: For training only. The rocket motor may eject material and damage aft portions of the helicopter. Bs’ should be carried on the LHEP M299’s lower rails to minimize damage to the stabilator.
K: HELLFIRE II. Features dual warheads for defeating reactive armor, electro optical countermeasures immunity and an externally programmable guidance section for trajectory shaping/seeker logic charges
M: HELLFIRE II. Blast fragmentation with a time delay fuze. Stencilled with an M forward of the forward band. Will show up as a K on the cockpit display
N: HELLFIRE II. Improved blast fragmentation with a metal augmented charge (MAC) to provide thermobaric effect that increases the probability of a kill. Increased lethality against urban structures.
N-5: Software update lower the missiles angle of attack at impact, and decreases the terminal flight path angle to enhance warhead penetration and improve target engagements for targets under overhangs. Does not change LOAL-H or LOAL-L shots.

Q

What is a thermobaric explosion

A

An explosive that utilizes oxygen to create a large high temperature explosion. Fuel is dispersed into the air and ignited. Kills are obtained via the initial pressure wave but mostly during the vacuum effect that will rupture organs. Death/injury can also result from severe burns and inhalation of burning fuel.

Q

Seeker modes

A

Cage: The seeker is inhibited from slaving or tracking until the gyro mass is spun up
Scan: the seeker is moved in a predetermined scan pattern (box scan) to help it acquire and lock on to a laser spot.
Stare: The seeker is commanded to look straight ahead along the missile body axis. K, M and N missiles cannot lock on LOBL in this modes. But they can still lock on LOAL.
Slave: The seeker is commanded to follow external line of sight commands. It can acquire and lock on if energy detected. This mode is employed prior to launch for all autonomous modes.
Track: The seeker is commanded by the seeker electronics assembly to maintain the reflected laser energy centered on the detector/preamplifier assembly so that the optics assembly is pointed at the target.

Q

CCM

A

The CCM system allows the missile to overcome active electro optical countermeasures being used within the target area. Only enable CCM if counter measures are suspected.

Q

AGM-114 Airframe limits

A

1: AGM-114B may not be loaded on the RHEP
2: Ashore: all four missile rails can be loaded at the same time
3: On air capable ships, all four missile rails can be loaded at the same time provided ship roll does not exceed +/- 5 degrees. For ship rolls greater than 5 but less than 10, the lower outboard rail shall not be loaded. For rolls greater than 10 the lower rails may not be used.
4: Landings with the two lower missile rail loaded limited to 8 degrees left wing down.
5: Relative roll angle shipboard landing limits
8 Degrees with two lower missile rail loaded
13 Degrees with two upper and lower inboard rails loaded
6: Hot refueling with ordnance mounted is prohibited ashore. Hot and cold refueling on ships is authorized with commanders approval.
7: AGM/ATM may not be loaded at the same time as a CATM
8: CATMs and APKWS rockets may not be carried at the same time. A CATM and an empty rocket pod may be carried.
9: Preferred loading for K/K2/M/N/N-5 is upper two, lower inboard, lower outboard. For the B is lower two rails.
