Ch 20 Insulin (wk6) Flashcards
What are the types of insulin?
Animal and Human derived insulin - Human derived insulin (recombinant DNA origin) is the most common and causes fewer reactions compared to animal derived insulin
Insulin is ordered, measured and delivered in what measurement?
Insulin is ordered, measured and delivered in UNITS
What are the three basic types of insulin identified by their action times?
Rapid Acting –> Humalog insulin ex: Lispro Short Acting –> Regular (R) Immediate Acting - (N) or (NPH) Long Acting –> ex: Lantus
How many units? U-100 Insulin U-500 Insulin
100 units per mL 500 units per mL
What’s special about U-500 Insulin?
- 5x as concentrated as U-100 - Has a warning in red on label - Indicated for clients with marked insulin resistance - Check calculations and preparations w/ 2 nurses (always regardless of U-100/500 insulin) - Accidental substitution of U-500 for U-100 insulin could result in a fatal overdose - Measure U-500 insulin with 1mL syringe (book)
What are the various types of insulin syringes used?
U-100 - 100-unit syringe (A) U-50 - 50-unit syringe (B) U-30 – 30 unit syringe (C)
What are alternate delivery devices for insulin?
Insulin Pumps - Delivery through a catheter placed under the skin - Basal: delivered continuously - Bolus: delivered before meals Insulin Dial Up Pens - Has a dose selector knob to “dial” desired dose of insulin
What are the components of an insulin order? ie. Humulin R U-100 16 unit subcut 1/2hr ac
ie. Humulin R U-100 16 unit subcut ac 1. Brand name and action time ex: Humulin R 2. The dosage strength ex: U-100 3. The number of units to be administered ex: 16 Units 4. The route (subcut or IV) ex: subcut 5. The time it should be given ex: 1/2hr ac (half hour before meals)
What determines the dosage of insulin?
The dosage of insulin is determined by the blood glucose level
What is the procedure for mixing two types of insulin in the same syringe?
- last injected is first drawn up ??
How to use a sliding scale?
??
