Ch. 20 Electrochemistry Flashcards
What is a REDOX reaction?
An electron transfer reaction, One species is oxidized and loses e-, and one is reduced and gains e-
What is an oxidizing agent?
What is a reducing agent?
The O.A is the e- acceptor; it accepts the e- that the oxidized species has lost. (it is the reduced one)
The R.A is the e- donor; it donates the e- that the reduced species has gained. (it is the oxidized!!)
OIL RIG!
Oxidation Is Losing
Reduction Is Gaining
Some rules for assigning the oxidation number:
Free elements=0
F=-1 , O=-2 , H=+1
WEEK 10 Page 2!!! for the rest. Also the activity!
What is a Galvanic/Voltaic Cell?
Cells that produce an electrical current from a spontaneous reaction!
What happens in the anodic and cathodic cells? How does the electrical current flow?
The Anode is the negative cell, and is where oxidation occurs. The Cathode is the positive cell, and where reduction occurs. e- flows from anode to cathode!
What is the Abbreviated Cell Notation?
Anode|Anodic Soln||Cathodic Soln|Cathode
What are ΔG and ΔE for a prod favored (spontaneous) reaction? And for a NONspont. rxn?
ΔG<0 and so ΔE>0. For nonspont (reactant favored): ΔG>0 and ΔE<0. this would essentially be the reverse rxn?
What are concentration cells?
A voltaic cell in which both 1/2 cells are the same, but different Molarity.
Read the Batteries!!!
Page 922!
What are AMPs a measure of?
AMPs (A) are a measure of Coulombs per Second. Essentially the speed at which moles of electrons travel!
