Ch 20 - Descending And Gliding Flashcards
Flight Pitch Angle
Pitch angle plus the AoA
Always positive
% Gradient = (D-T)/W x100
Gliding
%G = D/W x 100 (no thrust)
Depends on the excess of drag
Increased thrust = decreased descent gradient
Increased weight = no impact on glide
Best Glide Angle
SPD Vmd
Clean configuration
Roughly 4 degrees
Gliding for Distance / Gliding for Endurance
Distance = Vmd ~ 4 degrees (faster for heavier ac)
Endurance is based on rate of descent
Glide Range
= Height x L/D ratio
Flaps or landing gear will decrease the glide angle
Effect of Wind on Gliding
Headwind - Fly at Vmp (faster, nose down to be in the headwind for a lesser amount of time so that you go slightly further (decrease distance)
Tailwind - Slightly more range (Increase distance)
Descending Angle
Sin Gamma = D - T / W
