Ch 2: Theoretical Perspectives on Sexuality Flashcards
what is the sociobiological perspective?
field of biology that aims to examine and explain social behavior in terms of evolution.
- the desire to pass on our genes
what is cuckolding?
getting aroused when seeing your partner engage in sexual activity with someone else
- this is more likely along high IQ men
what is the psychoanalytic theory?
- ID: pleasure
- EGO: reality
- SUPEREGO: idealism
what are erogenous zones? what von used to do
points on the body that can stimulate pleasure (back on neck kissing)
stages of Psychoanalytical Theory?
- Oral: mouth
- Anal: anus
- Phallic: penis
- Latency: no sexual desire
- Genital: sexual intercourse
what is LIBIDO
sex energy which is the primary force motivating human behaviour
what were the criticisms of psychoanalytical theory?
- can’t test empirically
- p’s were not from general population
what were freuds views on women?
- anatomy is destined
- he believed women were inferior because they didn’t have a penis
- he believed orgasms from the clitoris were a problem in women
who said “to enjoy sexuality would be to enjoy pain and suffering” ?
Sigmund Freud
what are some learning theories?
- operant conditioning
- behaviour modification
- social learning
in psychological theories, what is Learning Theories in general?
a past stimulus evokes a response through unconditioned stimulus
what is an example of an unconditioned stimulus?
smelling cologne that your partner wears on someone else (sauvage dior lol)
what is an example of unconditioned response?
feeling hungry when smelling food
conditioned stimulus
sound of recess bell means its time to go out for recess
conditioned response
feeling scared to go to dentists office because you associate it with pain
what is operant conditioning?
- a method of learning that uses rewards and punishment to change behaviour
- Example: Confiscating the phone if a student is caught using it is positive punishment
behaviour modification
Theres SHAPING and AVERSIVE CONDITIONING.
- you can shape your partner sexually to do things you like overtime
- if someone causes problems, you can do an aversive stimulus so they know not to do it again
aversive stimulus
associating a problematic behaviour with an aversive stimulus (aversive= cause strong dislike)
how do we use Social Learning
observational learning: we learn by observing others
how do subjective interpretations of events influence our feelings
the same event can happen to you and someone else and it can result in one person being fine and the other being completely devasted (racism)
what are Cognitive Distortions
tendency to look at things in the worst case scenario (for example: just bc you have been let down by like 4 guys in a row you have a fear all guys will do the same thing)
whats script theory all about?
basically “shortcuts in life” to what you say or shouldn’t say (for example: seeing someone from acadia you went to highschool with and you basically say the same basic things everytime “hows life”)
what are sexual scripts oooouuu (U KNOW THIS ONE PERSONALLY TOO WELL LOL) :(
this is the idea that sexual behaviour is scripted like a play or film (for example: FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS SCRIPT BABEEEE YOU HAVE DONE THIS WITH LIKE 4 GUYS)
