ch 2 the brain Flashcards
Brainstem
Oldest and central part, connected to the brain
Medulla
Base of brainstem, controls basic life functions, damage means death
Reticular Formation
Nerve function controlling wakefulness and arousal
Thalamus
Directs messages to parts of the brain for processing
Pons
Helps regulate sleeping and dreaming
Cerebellum
Controls voluntary movements and balance, emotions, hearing, touch, muscle memory
Limbic System
Border between brainstem and cortex - regulates memory, fear, aggression, hunger, thirst
Hypothalamus
Regulates body’s maintenence functions: hunger, thirst, body temp.
Hippocampus
Helps process new memories for permanent storage
Amygdala
Controls emotional responses, fear and anger
Cerebral Cortex
Covers brain’s lower level structures
Glial Cells
Support and nourish neurons of the brain
Corpus Callosum
Connects the hemispheres and allows them to communicate with each other
Association Areas
Involved with learning, remembering, thinking, speaking
Frontal Lobes
Judgement and planning, influenced by limbic systems, decision making
