House of Burgesses
The first legislative assembly in the American Colonies

Virginia plan
Edmund Randolph’s proposal at the constitutional convention for a strong central goverment comprising of a two-house legislative body appointed by population with the power to make and enforce laws and collect taxes
Bicameral
Composed of 2 houses
New Jersey plan
William Paterson’s proposal for a national government consisting of a unicameral legislature in which every state had equal representation and a plural executive body chosen by legislature
Great Compromize
The agreement at the constitutional convention to split the legislature into 2 parties: one appointed by population, the other assigning each state 2 members
Federalism
Power-sharing arranged between the national and state governments in which some powers are granted to the national government alone, some powers are reserved to the states, some powers are heald concurrently, and other powers are prohibited to either or both levels of government
Elastic clause
The provision of article I of the constitution authorising congress to make those laws necessary and proper for carrying out the other laws it passes
Suprmeisy clause
Provision of article VI stipulating that the federal government, in exercising any of the powers enumerated in the constitution, must prevail over any conflicting or inconsistent state exercise of power
federalists
Supporters of the constitution and it’s strong central government
Amtifederalists
opponents to the radification of the constitution
factions
Groups- most often driven by economic motives- that place their own good above the good of the nation as a whole
Judicial review
The power of the US supreme court to review the acts of other political institutions and declare them unconstitutional
