CH 2 Short Answer Flashcards

Q

What is 3 reasons that British North America was considering Confederation?

A

National defense: The British colonies in North America had concerns about possible invasions and tensions with neighboring countries. They formed a confederation to unite their military forces and provide mutual defense and security. This helped them to protect themselves and their interests.

Infrastructure development: When multiple colonies needed to work together to build a transcontinental railroad project, it required significant resources and cooperation. Confederation would allow them to coordinate their efforts and share the costs of building the railroad.

Governance and autonomy: The colonies wanted to govern themselves while still being part of the British Empire. Confederation gave them more control over their own affairs and a chance to shape their future while still being connected to the British Crown.

Q

Who was considering the Maritime union?

A

The Maritime colonies had many challenges. Arthur Hamilton Gordon, the lieutenant-governor of New Brunswick, was concerned that joining the Province of Canada would harm the Maritime colonies’ power and independence. Instead, Gordon proposed that New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island unite to form a Maritime union as a solution to their issues. This union would allow the colonies to pool their tax funds and pay for necessary infrastructure, such as roads and railways.

Q

What is the Quebec Conference

A

The Québec Conference established that the federal government would consist of two houses. In the lower house, or House of Commons, representation would be based on population size. Smaller provinces, such as Prince Edward Island, would have fewer representatives. To provide some balance, the upper house, or Senate, would be based on regional representation. This meant that there would be a more equal number of members from Canada West, Canada East, and the Atlantic colonies.
