Ch. 2: Peripheral Nervous System Flashcards
how is the peripheral nervous system divided structurally and functionally?
structurally - cranial nerves, spinal nerves, autonomic nervous system
functionally - somatic and autonomic nervous system
cranial nerves
12 pairs
3 carry only sensory: olfactory, optic, auditory-vestibular nerve
4 carry only motor: oculomotor, trochlear, abducens, spinal accessory, hypoglossal
4 carry mixed sensory and motor: trigeminal, facial, glossopharyngeal, vagus: carries gut to brain messages
parasympathetic v sympathetic nervous system and their neurotransmitters
parasympathetic: rest and digest, acetylcholine is the primary neurotransmitter released
sympathetic: flight or fight; arousal, norepinephrine is the primary neurotransmitter released
somatic v automatic nervous system
somatic - voluntary movement
automatic - involuntary movement
efferent v afferent nerves
efferent nerves carry motor signals away from CNS
afferent nerves carry sensory signals to the CNS
