Ch 2 Molecules of life Flashcards
Atoms
basic units of all matter, made up of protons neutrons and electrons
Amino acid
A sub unit of protein
Carbohydrate
A compound containing principally carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in a 1:2:1 ratio
Covalent bond
A strong chemical bond formed when two atoms share electrons
Hydrogen bond
A weak bond, attraction between a hydrogen atom in a polar molecule and an electronegitive atom in the same or another molecule
Ion
an atom or molecule that has gained or lost electrons–cations and anions
Ionic bond
A chemical bond resulting from the attraction between positively and negatively charged ions; ions form when electrons from one atom become part of another atom
Lipid
An organic molecule that is insoluble in water
Macromolecule
A very large molecule that is usually consisting of repeating units
Nucleic Acid
a macro molecule consisting of chains of nuceotide sub units to form either DNA or RNA
Organic compounds
A compound that carbon atom covalently bonded to a hydrogen atom
