Ch 2: Intervention Flashcards
Intervention
Implementation of a plan of action to improve 1 or more aspects of an individual’s communication abilities; systematic and intentional
Systematic process of teaching dependent on client performance
i.e. Treatment
Intervention must be…
Effective: Does it work? Does it have value?
Efficient: Effects change relatively quickly? Compared to other treatment options? Least time intensive that works
Feasible: Implemented with adherence, according to professional prescription, can this client actually follow through with it?
Purposes of intervention
Prevention: Prevents a disorder from emerging, before a diagnosis occurs
Targets all people at risk for developing disorder, early language problems
Remediation: slow progress or reverse the course of a disorder once it has emerged; after a diagnosis
Delivered to people with clear disorders
Compensatory: Helps people cope with a disorder when symptoms are unlikely to disappear, disorder not amenable to remediation
Doesn’t change or make anything go away, helps you get around it
Goal Quality
Functional/Relevant (R): Directly improve client’s life
Measurable (M): Can be measured so progress can be documented
Attainable (A): Realistic and achievable so client can progress
Specific (S), TIme-based (T)
SMART GOALS
Phases of intervention/goal setting
Phase 1: Long-term goals
Anticipated outcome of therapy, best performance within projected period of time
Phase 2: Short-term goals
Behavioral objectives, understanding can be through behavior, but behavior is not understanding
Leads to long-term, sequential
Phase 3: Session-level goals
Addressed in specific session in measure-able terms
Leads to ST-> LT
Goal components
Behavior: Skills you want them to do; usually comes after the verb “will”
Condition: Context/situation they’re doing it in, setting
Criteria: Way you are measuring it
Intervention models
Pull-out/direct service: Therapist provides intervention directly to individual, most common
Co-teaching/parallel instruction: Collaborative working together to provide direct intervention
Doesn’t always have be with another professional
Intervention consultation: Therapist guides others to treat individual indirectly
Teaching third party to do therapy on client when therapist is not there
