Ch. 2: Establishing Professional Competencies through Education Flashcards
Overview
- Society influences how we function through mechanisms of licensure, certification, and accreditation. These mechanisms define the populations we can offer services to and the types of services that can be offered.
- If we are credential we would be allowed to provide certain services to certain populations (hearing aids to people with hearing loss).
- Licensure and certification place restrictions on how services are provided by requiring us to adhere to a Code of Ethics.
- Licensure and certification impose restrictions on how we are trained. Requirements for CCC awarded by ASHA and state licensure influence the curriculums of training programs.
- Credentialing requirements can influence how we are paid for services. HMO or Medicare may stipulate that services won’t be covered unless they are provided by a certified professional.
Certification
Voluntary mechanism where nongovernmental agency or association grants recognition to an individual who has met certain predetermined qualifications specified by that agency or association-ASHA is an example. If don’t get certification may have difficulty finding a job.
(For your protection as a student and professional)
Accreditation
Used by a professional organization to regulate the practice of an occupation by establishing standards for the curriculum and administration of programs by a university- CAA (Council of Academic Accreditation) is an example. Established the standards for the programs.
(They ARE affiliated with ASHA)
