ch 2 Flashcards
operational definitions
A variable defined in terms with how it is measured
participants/subjects
whose behavior is being studied
Data collection techniques
allow for empirical observations and measurements
set to stick
used to describe the results of the study and determine the probability of the observed differences happening by chance
findings
shared through reports in scientific meetings or journals
research method
General strategies for conducting scientific study
experiment
Manipulation of one variable under controlled conditions so that result in changes in another
independent variable (IV)
what you change to have an effect
dependent variable (DV)
what you are measuring in an experiment
situation very
Aspects of
discipline/person variables
differences in participants that will effect the result
experimenter/investigator effects
bias influence participant behavior
demand characteristics
Clues that convey the purpose of the experiment to the participant
experimental group
get the independent variable
control group
do not get the independent variable but otherwise are treated the same as the experimental group
Blind
The participant doesn’t know what’s happening
double blind
both the participant and the researcher do not know what’s happening
Random assignment
this takes care of any variables we do not know exist among participants
repeated measures/within subject design
conducting both the experimental and control experiment on one participant, this can cause practice effects, carry over effects, and changes in performance from fatigue etc
expose two groups
each person only does the experiment once, more people, higher chance
