Rationalism
The view that using logic and reason is the way to understand how the world works
Scientific thinking
A process using cognitive skills required to generate, test, and revise theories
Replication
The repetition of study to confirm the results
Theory
Set of related assumptions from which testable predictions can be made
Scientific method
Observe, predict, test, interpret, communicate, replicate
Hypothesis
A specific, informed, and testable prediction of what kind of outcome should occur under a particular condition
Reliability
Test or measure gives us a consistent result over time or between scientific observers
Validity
The degree to which a test accurately measures what it purports to measure
Pseudoscience
Practices that appear and claim to be science but do not use the scientific method to reach their conclusions
Research design
Plans of action for how to conduct a scientific study
Variable
Anything that changes or varies, within or between individuals
Population
An entire group a researcher is interested in
