Ch 2 Flashcards
Constellations
region of sky with defined borders
Celestial Sphere
imaginary sphere depicting area in which the stars and planets lie
Why do objects rise and set?
Objects move east to west because Earth rotates on its axis west towards east, counterclockwise
Variation with Latitude
Changing latitude affects the zenith and the locations of the celestial sphere so there will be different constellations seen whereas longitude has no effect on the view
Seasons of the Earth
Earth’s tilt causes varying amount of sunlight to hit Earth during different times of the year. Hemispheres experience opposite seasons
Solstice vs Equinox
Solstice is when the Earth is tilted closest or farthest away from the Sun causing the longest or shortest day in the year. Equinox is when the Sun shines on the Earth equally.
