Ch. 2 Flashcards
nominal scales
classify people or objects into categories, classes or sets.
measurement
set of rules for assigning numbers to represent objects, traits, attributions, or behaviors.
ordinal scale
rank people or objects according to the amount of a characteristics they display or possess.
interval scales
rank people or objects like an ordinal scale but on a scale of equal units.
ratio scales
have the properties of interval scales plus a true zero point.
distribution
is a set of scores.
mean
the arithmetic average of a distribution.
median
is the score of potential score formerly referred to as the “point” that divides the distribution in half.
mode
is the most frequently occurring score in a distribution.
range
is the distance between the smallest and the largest score in a distribution.
standard deviation
is the measure of the average distance that scores vary from the mean of the distribution.
variance
is the measure of variability that has special meaning as a theoretical concept in measure theory and statistics.
normal distribution
is a symmetrical unimodal distribution in which the mean, median and mode are all equal.
correlation coefficient
a correlation coefficient is a quantitive measure of the relationship between two variables.
coefficient of determination
is interpreted as the amount of variance shared by two variables.
