Ch. 19: Ketones and Aldehydes Flashcards
Hydrate formation reagent
[H+], H2O (reversible the same way)
What does hydrate formation do?
=O to 2 -OH groups
Acetal formation reagent
[H+], ROH, -H2O
What does acetal formation do?
=O to 2 -OR groups
Cyclic acetal formation reagent
[H+], HOCH2CH2OH (ethylene glycol), -H2O
What does cyclic acetal formation do?
Forms acetal (adds ethylene glycol ring w/out H; “cap”)
Cyclic thioacetal formation reagent
[H+], HSCH2CH2SH (ethylene dithiol), -H2O
What does cyclic thioacetal formation do?
Forms acetal (adds ethylene dithiol w/out H; “cap”)
Desulfurization reagent
Raney Ni (Ra-Ni)
What does desulfurization do?
Removes S atoms and replaces with H (can remove acetal cap if applicable)
Imine formation reagents
[H+], RNH2, - H2O
What does imine formation do?
Replaces O with N-R
Enamine formation reagent
[H+], R2NH, -H2O
What does enamine formation do?
Replaces O with N-R2
Oxime formation reagent
[H+], NH2OH, - H2O
