CH 18 Vocab Flashcards
Absorbance
A = P0/P were P0 is the radiant power of light ( power per unit area) striking the sample at one side and P is the radiant power emerging from the other side. Directly proportional to concentration
formally called optical density
absorption spectrum
a graph of absorbance or molar absorptivity versus, wavelength, frequency, or wavenumber of light
Beer’s Law
relates the absorbance of a sample to its concentration, pathlength, and molar absorptivity
A=abc
chromophore
the part of a molecule responsible for absorption of light of a particular frequency
cuvette
a cell with transparent walls used to hold samples for spectrophotometric measurements
derivatization
chemical alteration to attach a group to a molecule so that the molecule can be detected conveniently. Alternatively, treatment can alter volatility or solubility to allow easier seperation
electromagnetic spectrum
the whole range of electromagnetic radiation, including visible light, radio waves, X-rays etc
electronic transition
one in which an electron goes from one energy level to another
a graph of luminescence intensity versus luminescence wavelength (or freq or wavenumber) obtained with a fized excitation wavelength
emission spectrum
