Ch. 18 Flashcards
Altered mental status
A significant indication of injury or illness in a patient
Aneurysm
A ballooning of a weakened area within an artery wall
Aphasia
Which is a communication disorder from damage to language areas in the brain
Expressive aphasia
Nonfluent the patient knows exactly what he wants to say however he has trouble saying because he can’t form the right response in his brain or pick correct words
Receptive aphasia
Fluent the person has difficulty understanding what you are asking or telling them
Global aphasia
Which is the most severe but common after a stroke the patient cannot speak or understand
Arteriovenous malformation
Is a tangle of abnormally formed blood vessels in the brain or on its surface which divert blood from the artery to the vein
Cerebral embolism
When the embolus lodges in a cerebral artery and occluded it
Thrombus
A clot develops at the site of occlusion
Thrombosis
The process of a clot formation
Thrombotic stroke
A stroke resulting from thrombus formation
Embolus
A clot or other matter that has traveled from another area of the body
Embolus stroke
When the embolus lodges in a cerebral artery and occluded it it is onow as cerebral embolism and results in
Ischemic penumbra
The area of ischemic during the stroke where the brain cells are electrically silent from lack of atp but are still alive
Infarct zone
Area of dead tissue
Ischemic stroke
Stroke caused by a blockage
Hemorrhagic stroke
Stroke caused by a rupture and bleeding
Cluster headaches
These are headaches that occur repetitively in clusters
Migraine headaches
Are thought to be caused by a spasm of vessels followed by vasodilation and change in the chemicals that transmit nervous impulses in the brain
Vascular headaches
These occur because of dilation or distention or inflammation within the cranium
Coma
An unconscious state in which the patient does not respond to painful stimuli
Cryptogenic stroke
Defined as one that cannot be conclusively attributed to an embolism originating from the heart thrombosis in a artery or small artery disease
Large vessel occlusion
Also known as an emergent large vessel occlusion elvo
Neurologic deficit
When a patient loses some or all these abilities move speak feel sensations
