Nat Turner’s Rebellion
A slave rebellion in 1831 led by Nat Turner that killed 60 Virginians, mostly women and children.
American Colonization Society
Founded in 1817, this group transported slaves back to Africa.
Republic of Liberia
This country was founded in 1822 for freed slaves and African Americans so they could return to Africa. Th capital was Monrovia.
William Wilberforce
British minister and abolitionist who influenced many US abolitionists and was one of the main causes for the abolition of slavery in Great Britain in 1833.
The Liberator
A newspaper written by William Lloyd Garrison, who strongly opposed slavery and wrote a strong piece about this on New Year’s day, 1831.
American Anti-slavery Society
A group of abolitionists who formed in 1833 to abolish slavery.
Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World
Book written in 1829 by David Walker which called for a war to end slavery.
Sojourner Truth
An African American abolitionist who fought for woman’s suffrage and an end to slavery.
Martin Delaney
One of the first African American leaders to take the idea of recolonizing Africa seriously.
Frederick Douglass
A former slave and African American abolitionist who escaped slavery in 1838 and wrote the Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass in 1845, his autobiography.
Mason-Dixon Line
Line between North and South, originally the southern border of Pennsylvania.
Gag Resolution
Motion passed by Congress in 1836 which said that all antislavery appeals be tabled without discussion.
Elijah P. Lovejoy
An abolitionist and newspaper writer whose printing press was destroyed 4 times and was killed by a mob in 1837, and became a martyr.
