Ch. 16 Dizziness and Vertigo Flashcards
What is the features of acute vestibular syndrome?
Dizziness of sudden onset, persistent, lasting more than a day, with nausea or vomiting, gait disturbance, nystagmus, intolerance to head motion
What systems are involved in helping the body maintain equilibrium and determine its location in space?
Visual
Proprioception
Vestibular
Mismatched information from any of these symptoms leads to vertigo
What is the presumed cause of BPPV?
Otoliths break free and get into the vestibular canals causing positional vertigo
What is the usual physiologic cause of nystagmus?
Imbalance between the usually synchronized signals from the two vestibular systems, therefore, nystagmus usually comes from unilateral vestibular disease causing imbalance of the rectus muscles of the eye
What is the pathophysiology of vestibular neuritis/labyrinthitis?
Inflammation of the vestibular nerve
What is the pathophysiology of Meniere’s Disease?
Endolymphatic hydrops (too much endolymph)
