CH 16 - Composites Flashcards
Define compostie
- combination of two or more individual materials
- multiphase material that is usually artificially made
What are the two keys to composites?
- adhesion between components
- matrix and dispersed phases
What are the purposes of the matrix phase?
- transfer stress to dispersed phase
- protect dispersed phase from environment
What is the purpose of an MMC matrix?
increase yield & tensile, creep resist
What is the purpose of a CMC matrix?
increase plane strain fracture strength
What is the purpose of a PMC matrix?
increase elastic modulus, yield & tensile, creep resist
What are the three classification of composites?
particle-reinforced, fiber-reinforced, structural
What are the characteristics of fiber-reinforced composites?
- fibers very strong in tension
- provide significant strength improvement to the composite
What are the types of fibers?
whiskers, fibers & wires
What are the characteristics of fiber whiskers?
- thin single crystals
- large length to diameter ratios
- high crystal perfection
- expensive and difficult to disperse
What are the characteristics of fibers?
- polycrystalline or amorphous
- generally polymers or ceramic
What are the types of structural composites?
laminates & sandwich panels
What are the characteristics of laminates?
-stacked and bonded fiber reinforced sheets
What are the characteristics of sandwich panels?
-honeycomb core between two facing sheets
