German troops failed to capture the city of Leningrad, Hitler ordered a siege, or military blockade designed to force the city to surrender. In the winter, Soviet civilians starved to death and eventually millions died.

The Battle of Stalingrad

A

German troops bombed the place to rubble, moved in to wipe the rest out. Soviet defenders were pinned between Germans and river. Stalin wanted to save the city at all cost, ended up having tens of thousands die. They counter-attacked and trapped the Axis soldiers. Axis survivors were taken to prison camps.

Japanese forced Filipino and American prisoners to march up the Battan peninsula to a distant prison camp, with tropical heat, lack of food and water and much violence.
