Ch 14/ Lab 12; Nervous Tissue Flashcards
Nerves
PNS bundles of axons
Tracts
CNS bundles of axons
Types of Nervous tissue
- Neurons (electrically excitable)
- Glial cells(not)
Neuron cell parts
- cell body
- dendrites
- Axon hillock
- axon
- synaptic terminals
Neuron FUNCTIONAL classes
- SENSORY (afferent): sensory receptors to CNS
- MOTOR (efferent) : CNS to muscles/glands
- INTERNEURONS: in CNS, comms. Btwn sensory & motor
Neurons; STRUCTURAL classification
- according to # of processes
- Unipolar
- Bipolar
- Multipolar
4 major brain regions
- Cerebrum
- Cerebellum
- Brainstem
- Diencephalon
Brain wrinkle parts
Gyri: multiple of gyrus, aka folds
Sulci: plural Sulcus depression btwn folds
Organization of Neural tissue
GRAY MATTER
Houses motor neuron & interneuron cell bodies, dendrites, telodendria, UNmyelinated axons
-Forms Cerebral Cortex (outer brain)
- Forms cerebral nuclei , deep (in white matter) clusters of neuron cell bodies
Organization of neural tissue
WHITE MATTER
- myelinated axons
- deep to cortex gray matter
Brain support & protection (4)
- Bony cranium
- Meninges (protective connective tissue)
- CSF (cerebrospinal fluid)
- Blood-brain barrier
Diencephalon parts
-Thalamus
-Hypothalamus
- interthalamic adhesion
+epithalamus?
Brainstem parts
- Midbrain
- Pons
- Medulla oblongata
Cranial meninges functions
- separate brain from bones of cranium
- protect blood vessels of brain; form some large veins that drain blood from brain
- contain/circulate cerebrospinal fluid
Layers of cranial meninges
- Pia mater - thin, innermost, adhered to brain
-
Arachnoid mater - resembles spiderweb
- sub arachnoid space btwn pia and arachnoid
-
Dura mater - Tough outer layer; 2 sub layers
- inner meningeal layer
- outer periosteal layer
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
Defined: clear liquid that circulates in ventricles & subarachnoid space
CSF functions
- Buoyancy; brain floats in CSF
- Protection; liquid cushion
- Environmental stability; CSF transports nutrients + removes waste from brain
Cerebral lobes
- Frontal
- Parietal
- Temporal
- Occipital
- Insula
Insula primary function
Interpretation of taste; memory
Frontal lobe primary function
-
Parietal primary function
-
Temporal primary function
-
Occipital primary function
