CH 14 Flashcards
Definition of EBP:
The conscientious, judicious, and explicit use of the current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients
Clinical decisions are based upon 3 things:
- Systematic review of the evidence
- Clinical expertise
- Patient Values
4 steps to evidence based practice:
Step 1: clinical problem identified and an answerable research question is formed.
Step 2: Perform a review of the literature and collect the best evidence.
Step 3: research evidence summarized and critically analyzed
Step 4: Evidence synthesized and applied to clinical practice
What are clinical practice guidelines (CPGs)?
systematically developed statements to assist the clinic aim and patient on proper course of action. Developed through the use of evidence, expert opinion, and patient preference.
What type of data does historical research use?
Data that is already available.
Differentiate between a primary source and a secondary source.
Primary source: original document, eyewitness account, direct recording of events.
Secondary source: description of event by someone other than an eyewitness, summary info in textbooks, or newspaper accounts.
External criticism:
investigates authenticity of data
Internal criticism:
evaluates worth of data. ensures data is accurate and reliable.
Descriptive research
involves collecting data.
determines and reports existing phenomena
Case studies or clinical reports:
in depth investigation of an individual, group, or institution
Developmental research:
studies of behavior that differentiate individuals at different levels of age, growth, or maturation
Longitudinal studies:
differentiate changes in an individual or group over time
Normative research:
investigates standards of behavior, standard values for given characteristics of a sample
Qualitative research:
seeks facts or causes of social phenomena, complex human behavior.
Utilizes inductive reasoning.
Correlational research:
attempts to determine whether a relationship exists between 2 or more variables.
