Apnea
Absence of breathing identified by no chest wall movement and no sensation or sound of air moving in and out of the nose or mouth
Aspiration
Patient breathing blood into the lungs
Avpu
Mnemonic which stands for alert responds to verbal stimulus responds to painful stimulus unresponsive
Blunt trauma
Caused by a force that impacts or is applied to the body but is not sharp enough to penetrate it
Brain herniation
A severe and detrimental condition that may occur in a head injury
Cerebrospinal fluid csf
Clear fluid that cushions and surrounds the brains and spinal cord

Dyspnea
Difficulty in breathing
Extension posturing
Also known as decerebrate posturing the patient arches the back and extend the arms straight out parallel to the body
Flail segment
Two or more adjacent ribs are fractured in two or more places
Flexion posturing
Known as decorticate posturing the patient arches the back and flexes the arms inward toward the chest
Modified secondary assessment
An exam focused on a specific injury site
Occluded
Closed or blocked airway
Orthopnea
Inability to breath or shortness of breath while lying flat
Paradoxical movement
Any segments of the chest that are moving inward during inspiration and outward during exhalation opposite to the direction of the rest of the chest
