in 1884-1885 there was a conference in the scramble for Africa to lay down rules for the division, 1 any country can claim land by showing control of the area however most Europeans never put thought into the ethnic/linguistic groups while distributing, also no African rulers were invited to the conference

Boer War
in 1899 the Boers and the British fought with the Boers using guerrilla warfare but the British would imprison women and children. The south Africans were also involved i n the war Many south aftricans were placed in concentration camps and killed, over 14,000 were killed in these camps, the war ended with Britain on top and after the war the Boers joined the Union of South Africa

Protectorate:A country or a territory with its own internal government but under the control of an outside power
Sphere of Influence:An area in which an outside power claims exclusive investment or trading privileges
Economic Imperialism:An independent but less developed country controlled by private business interests rather than other governments

African Resistance

Emperor of Ethiopia who successfully played the Italians, French and British against each other
Built up a large arsenal of modern weapons before getting tricked by Italy but still defeating them in battle
Maji Maji Rebellion
Africans in German east africa believed the magic water made them bulletproof so they fought back but got massacred
Ottoman Empire
Ottoman Empire starts losing power when they cant adapt to the modern world
they start by trying to reform after the government broke apart but corruption spread causing inflation and theft and while trying to catch up with technology Selim III was overthrown

War between Russians and Ottomans in Afghanistan and Persia until Britain and France joined the Ottomans against Russia the war ending with the Ottomans winning

Human made canal connecting the Red Sea to the Mediterranean mainly made with French money however the French couldnt pay for the labor
