Ch. 1.1 | Rates, Ratios, & Proportions Flashcards
Extremes
In the proportion (a)/(b) = (c)/(d), read “(a) is to (b) as (c) is to (d)”.
(a) and (d) are called extremes of the proportion
Means
In the proportion (a)/(b) = (c)/(d), read “(a) is to (b) as (c) is to (d)”.
(b) and (c) are the means
Proportion
An equation that states that two ratios are equal.
In the proportion (a)/(b) = (c)/(d), read “(a) is to (b) as (c) is to (d)”.
Rate
A ratio that compares two quantities with different kinds of units.
Rates are often expressed in terms of units of time.
Ratio
A comparison of two numbers or quantities, usually written as a fraction.
Ratios are usually expressed as a common fraction (a)/(b) in lowest terms. Ratios can be expressed as a:b or (a) to (b).
