Ch. 11 Flashcards
a measure of how common a certain allele is in the population.
Allele Frequency
the combined alleles of all of the individuals in a population.
Gene pool
the frequency is highest near the mean value and decreases toward each extreme end of the range
Normal distribution
the observable change in the allele frequencies of a population over time.
Microevolution
Pathway of natural selection in which one uncommon phenotype is selected over a more common phenotype.
Directional selection
Pathway of natural selection in which intermediate phenotypes are selected over phenotypes at both extremes
Stabilizing selection
Pathway of natural selection in which two opposite, but equally uncommon, phenotypes are selected over the most common phenotype
Disruptive selection
The movement of alleles from one population to another
Gene flow
Change in allele frequencies do to chance alone, occurring most commonly in small populations
Genetic drift
a genetic drift that occurs after an event greatly reduces the size of a population.
Bottleneck effect
A genetic drift that occurs after a small number of individuals colonize a new area
Founder effect
occurs when certain traits increase mating success.
Sexual selection
Condition in which a population’s allele frequencies for a given trait do not change from generation to generation.
Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium
