Examines conscious raising, collective empowerment, polarization and group decision making to show how these things get individuals to mobilize

1) conscious raising
- Group decision where beliefs are created or enforced to get people to mobilize
- Participants gain a sense of the potential power of a movement

2) collective empowerment
- The recruitment and commitment of participants
- If large numbers of people are willing to sacrifice themselves for the movement, the chances for success are seen greater

3) Polarization
- Protest challenge authority in a way in a way that institutional tactics do not

4) Collective group decision
- Role is to motivate and continue commitment of movement participants
- An example of these four thing (conscious raising, collective empowerment, polarization and group decision making) are represented in an example

-Columbia university students chained and sat in front of classrooms and administration buildings to protest stock deals in business in south africa
Blockage lasted 3 weeks

-In this example conscious raising was used to get people to join this SM. Leaders educated others about how blacks in south africa were oppressed. They did this by including dormitory sessions, forums, and teach ins.

-collective empowerment
Individuals showed that they were committed to the SM by taking personal risks and thus getting others to join.

-Polarization
students challenged authority so they were threatened by administration to get expelled if they kept protesting but they did not back down as doing so could have negatively impacted the SM. Instead they kept protesting which showed that they were committed and attracted more individuals
