Ch. 1 The Science Of Biology Flashcards
What are the characteristics of the Kingdom Archaebacteria?
Unicellular
prokaryotic
Found in extreme environments (hold, cold, salty)
Most ancient form of organism
Where can you find Archaebacteria?
In extreme conditions (hot, cold, salty)
What is methanogenic bacterium?
Found in the archaebacterium kingdom and manufactures methane because of its metabolic activity
What are the characteristics of the Kingdom Eubacteria?
Single celled
prokaryotic
Responsible for many disease
What are the characteristics of the Kingdom Protista?
Unicellular
eukaryotic
photosynthesize
What are the characteristics of the Kingdom Fungi?
Non-photosynthetic
multicellular
eukaryotic
How do fungi obtain energy?
Through the decomposition of food externally
What are the characteristics of the Kingdom Plantae?
Photosynthetic
Multicellular
Eukaryotic
What are the characteristics of the Kingdom Animila?
Multicellular
Eukaryotic
Digest food internally
What are some properties that all living things must share?
All living things must be complex, able to move, and respond to stimulation
What is a cell?
Tiny compartment surrounded by a membrane that can have a simple or complex interior and must be able to reproduce
What is metabolism?
Chemical process that extracts energy from a food source
How does metabolism work?
Plants and algae capture energy from the sun and turn it into food for themselves and those who consume it
Why is homeostasis important?
To keep the interior of all living things constant
Do all living things reproduce?
Yes, even the most simple of bacteria can split in two
What determines the way in which an organism will look, act, ect?
The order of the subunits that make up the DNA
How does the DNA dictate the characteristics of the organism?
Genes are the specific instruction within the DNA
What is heredity?
Transmission of characteristics from parent to offspring
What is the hierarchy of increasing complexity within cells?
Molecule, macromolecule, organelle, cell
What is the hierarchy of increasing complexity within multicellular organisms?
Tissue, organ, organ system, organism
What is the hierarchy of increasing complexity amongst organisms?
Population, species, community, ecosystem
How does energy get used by living organisms?
Most organisms obtain energy from the sun and it gets used up as it passes through the ecosystem
Does the amount of energy increase or decrease as it moves through the ecosystem?
Energy decreases at moves through each trophic level
What is photosynthesis?
Plants and algae convert light energy captured from sun into chemical energy for other uses
