history
history is the study of the past
source
a source is something that gives us information or evidence about a person, place or thing in the past
prehistory
prehistory- the period of time before writing was used. we rely of archaeology for evidence from this period of time
archaeology
the study of the remains left by people in the past
what can we use as evidence
written sources and documents
why do we study history
we gain an understanding of how past events unfolded. we learn how people lived before us
historian
someone who is an expert in, or student of, history
cross-check
using more than one source to make sure the information is correct
where can a historian go to find sources
libraries, archives and museums
archive
catalogues and stores a collection of written and other sources e.g the national archives of ireland in dublin
museum
collects and displays objects for public education and appreciation e.g the national museum in dublin
what are the two categories of sources
primary and secondary
primary source
a source from the time of the event; a first-hand account of what happened e.g photos, letters, autobiographies
secondary source
a source from a later date, after the time of the event e.g podcasts, handling boxes, biographies
artefact
any human-made object e.g pottery, a tool
autobiography
an account of a person’s life written by the person themselves
biography
an account of a person’s life written by someone else
census
an official survey of the population
handling box
contains copies of artefacts so that anyone can examine them without damaging an original
accuracy
judging how correct the information you are using is
bias
when an account is not balanced, but unfairly favours one side
exaggeration
when something is represented as better or worse than it actually was
propaganda
information that has been designed to influence the attitudes of the general public
what are the five types of sources
written, visual, aural (hear), oral (discuss) and tactile (touch)
