Ch 1 pt 2 - Intro to Statistics Flashcards
Statistics
Mathematical procedures for organizing, summarizing and interpreting data.
Descriptive statistics
Statistics for organizing information. It describes the characteristics of the sample.
Inferential statistics
Statistics for interpreting information. It’s used to generalize from the sample findings to the population. It’s used to draw conclusions.
Describing data: Statistics
Derived from data and measures describing samples (describes samples and are calculated from data collected from samples). Commonly calculated statistics include the mean (M) and Standard Deviation (SD).
Describing data: Population parameters
Derived from data and measures describing populations (describes populations, which can be commonly described in terms of their means and SDs). When describing a population, we use the symbols μ (mu) which represents the population mean and σ (sigma) which represents population SD.
Raw scores
Represented by letters (X,Y)
Number of data points
Represented by N. N also refers to sample size.
Summation
Represented by the sign Σ (sigma). Summation means adding up all values.
