Atrophy
a reduction in the size or number of cells in an organ or tissue, with a corresponding decreasing in function
Hypertrophy
an increase in the size of the cells of a tissue or organ in response to a demand for increased function
Hyperplasia
an increase in the number of cells in a tissue or organ
Dysplasia
a loss in the uniformity of individual cells and their architectural orientation
Neoplasia
“new growth”- an abnormal proliferation of cells that are no longer controlled by the factors that govern the growth of normal cells
Malignant tumors are referred to as
Cancers
The suffix of benign tumors is
-omas
Sarcomas
Highly malignant tumors arising from connective tissues, such as, bone, muscle, and cartilage. Spreads more rapidly than carcinoma
Morbidity
the rate of which an illness or abnormality occurs
Mortality
calculated by reviewing the population involved to statistically calculate the expected death rate
Antigens
foreign substance that evokes an immune response
Antibodies
immunoglobulins responding to the antigens to make them harmless
Immune
Protected against antigens; antibodies binding with antigens to make them harmless
Anaphylactic Reaction
hypersensitive reaction resulting in a histamine release
