5 Levels of Proficiency (according to Benner)
- Novice - beginning nursing student, or any nurse entering a situation in which there is no previous level of experience.
- Advanced Beginner - A nurse who has had some level of experience with the situation.
- Competent - A nurse who has been in the same clinical position for 2 to 3 years.
- Proficient - A nurse with more than 2 to 3 years of experience in the same clinical position.
- Expert - A nurse with diverse experience who has an intuitive grasp of an existing or potential clinical problem.
American Nurses Association (ANA)
Professional organization that represents all registered nurses in the USA
International Council of Nurses (ICN)
Represents nursing worldwide, advance nursing profession, promote wellbeing of nurses, advocate for health in all policies
Code of Ethics
Statement of philosophical ideals of right & wrong that define the principles you will use to provide care to your patients
Standards of Professional Nursing Practice
-Assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, evaluation
-a critical thinking model known as the nursing process
ANA defines nursing as
Incorporates art & science of caring & focuses on the protection, promotion, & optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness & injury, facilitation of healing, & alleviation of suffering through compassionate presence
ICN defines nursing as
nursing encompasses autonomous & collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups, & communities, sick or well, & in all settings
Standards of Professional Performance
Ethics, advocacy, respectful & equitable practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, scholarly inquiry, quality of practice, professional practice evaluation, resource stewardship, environmental health
Autonomy
involves the initiation of independent nursing interventions w/o medical orders
Accountability
means that you are responsible professionally & legally for the type & quality of nursing care provided
Caregiver
help patients maintain & regain health, manage disease & symptoms, & attain maximal level of function & independence through the healing process
Patient Advocate
protect your patient’s human & legal rights & provide assistance in asserting those rights if the need arises
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)
-most independently functioning nurse
-has master’s degree or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
-title of APRN for nurses prepared in any of 4 roles
Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)
-APRN that has master’s degree or doctorate in nursing & is an expert in a specialized area of practice
-provides diagnosis, treatment, & ongoing management of pts in all healthcare settings
