Ch 1 Mass, Matter, and Properties Flashcards
Define Matter
Anything that occupies space and has mass
Define Mass
The amount of matter in an object
Define Weight
Measures the force of gravity on an object
Name the States Of Matter
Gas, Liquid, Solid
Define Element
One type of atom that can not be broken down further
Define Compound
Consists of 2 or more types of atoms
What separated a hypothesis from a theory?
A hypothesis is a predication based on observations.
A theory has been studied and tested over years to create a logical explanation or conclusion.
What is a mixture? Name 2 types of mixtures and give an example of each.
A mixture consists of different types of particles.
Homogenous mixture (sugar in coffee) Heterogeneous mixture (cereal)
What is a Pure Substance?
Homogenous mixture with a constant composition
What is the difference between a Chemical Property and Chemical Change
Property: A characteristic that allows a substance to change chemically (Ex: flammability, toxicity, acidity, etc)
Change: When the composition of a substance changes from one type to another (Ex: burning wood = pile of ash)
Explain the difference between a Physical Change and a Physical Property
Physical Change: When matter changes form without changing its chemical composition (ex: boiling water)
Physical Property: An observable characteristic that occurs during a physical change (ex: shape, color, texture, etc)
Define Extensive Property
The property depends on the amount of matter present (ex: volume and mass)
Define Intensive Property
Does NOT depend on the amount of matter present
Accuracy
A measurement that is close to the true value of a quantity
Precision
When several measurements are within the same proximity
