Ch. 1: Intro to Earth Flashcards
What is Physical Geography?
The study of physical elements of geography
What is Cultural Geography?
The study of the human and/or cultural elements of geography
How did “geography” get it’s name?
It comes from Greek words “earth description”
Name the steps of the scientific method.
Observation, hypothesis, design experiment, predict outcome, conduct experiment, conclusion
What is a scientific theory?
The highest order of understanding for a body of information
What are the two systems of measurement?
English system and International system
What are the four “spheres” that make up Earth?
Lithosphere, Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Biosphere
How was the universe believed to be created?
Through the big bang
How was the solar system created?
Through a condensing nebula
What is a nebula?
A huge, cold, diffuse cloud of gas and dust
What is the difference between the Terrestrial planets and Jovian planets?
Terrestrial planets are smaller and more dense, while Jovian planets are bigger and less dense
What is the Kuiper Belt?
The area beyond Neptune
What is Earth’s highest and lowest points of elevation?
Highest: Mt. Everest; Lowest: Mariana Trench
Who is known for calculating Earth’s circumference?
Eratosthenes
What is Earth’s grid system based on?
The equator, as well as the North and South Poles
What is a great circle?
When a plane passes through the center of the planet, creating two equal halves
What is Earth’s grid system referred as?
Graticule
What is latitude?
Description of location expressed as an angle north or south of the equator
What is latitude and longitude measured as?
Degrees (°), minutes (‘), seconds (“)
What is longitude?
Description of location expressed as an angle east or west of the prime meredian
What are some of the effects of Earth’s rotation?
Coriolis effect, changing gravitational poles seen in oceans, day and night
How long does it take Earth to do a complete rotation?
24 hours
How long does it take Earth to do a complete revolution around the sun?
365.25 days
Describe perihelion and aphelion.
It describes Earth’s closest (perihelion) and farthest (aphelion) locations in it’s orbit
