What is the most common form of violence that women experience globally?
Intimate partner violence. Also known as spousal abuse.
What are some types of violence that are inflicted in women?
Acts of violence against women include threats of violence, coercion, or arbitrary depravation of liberty. Whether they are public or private.
Globally acts of violence against women
· Physical, sexual and psychological violence occur
in the family.
· That includes battering, sexual abuse of children.
· Dowry related violence, marital rape.
· Female genital Mutilation (FGM)
· Non-spousal violence
· And exploitation
Where else besides the victim’s home does violence take place?
It can be at work: sexual harassment and educational institutions.
Women are trafficked and forced into prostitution.
What countries are more likely to be abusive towards women?
Bangladesh
Ethiopia
Peru
Tanzania more than 50% of women are abused.
Female mutilation
he term female genital mutilation (FGM) refers to all procedures involving partial or total removal of the exter-nal female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for nonmedical reasons.
Honor killing
Honor killing is the traditional practice in which men kill a female relative who
is believed to have brought dishonor upon the family or community for forced or sus-pected sexual activity outside marriage.
What is a dowry?
Dowry is payment of money or articles during, before, or after marriage by the girl’s parent to her in-laws; the cash and presents given must be linked to the actual marriage in order to be considered illegal dowry.
Bride-burning
The bride’s in-laws consider their dowries inadequate; bride burning is an example of dowry death that is practiced. In bride-burning cases, it is alleged that a man, or his family, douses his wife with kero-sene, gasoline, or other flammable liquid, and sets the woman on fire, leading to her death.
Female Feoeticide
Female foeticide is the act of aborting a fetus because it is female. This happens in India every year.
Combating Violence
In 2012 the U.S. released its first ever strategy to prevent and respond to gender-based violence globally with key objectives:
– Increase and enhance coordination of gender-based violence prevention and response efforts.
– Improve collection, analysis, and use of data and research to enhance gender-based violence and prevention efforts.
– Enhance or expand U.S. government programming that addresses gender-based violence.
What do United Nations do?
United Nations
The UN leads the effort to protect vulnerable women and girls worldwide and adopted the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women in 1993.
The UN General Assembly accepted a resolution in December 2012 on the elimination of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), which includes procedures that intentionally alter or cause injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons without any health benefits.
