Ch. 1 - Defining Concepts Flashcards
What is Thermodynamics?
-It is the science about heat and its relation to energy and work.
What is a system?
- Used to describe “whatever” you want to study
What are the two types of systems?
- Closed and open ( control volume)
What is a closed system?
- Refers to a fixed quantity of mass
- no mass transfer occurs
What is an opened system ( Control Volume)?
- A region of space through which mass may flow
- Mass transfer occurs
What is a system boundary?
- A control surface
- The dashed line surrounding a system
What are two ways to describe a system?
- Macroscopic
- Microscopic
What is a property?
- A macroscopic characteristic of a system i.e. ( mass, volume, temperature, etc.) a numerical value can be assigned at a given time, without knowledge of the previous behavior
What is a process?
- Transformation from one state to another
What is a state?
- Refers to a condition of a system as described by its properties
What is steady-state?
- Property that does not change over time
- Expressed mathematically with a partial derivative
What is used to describe a systems and its behavior?
- Property
- State
- Process
- Steady-State
- Extensive and Intensive properties
What is extensive property?
- Additive
- Ex: mass & volume
What is an intensive property?
- Non-additive
- Ex: temperature & pressure
What is required to reach equilibrium in Thermodynamics?
- Mechanical Equilibrium
- Thermal “ “
- Pase “ “
- Chemical “ “
