Eg: knee is distal to the thigh
Superficial
Toward of at body surface
Ipsilateral
Same side of body
Contralateral
Opposite sides of the body
Axial Part
Main axis of the body
Head, neck, throat
Appendicular Part
Appendages or limbs
Sagittal Plane
Vertical plane; divides the body into right and left halves
Midsagittal plane is right in the middle
Frontal Plane
Divides body into front and back halves
Transverse Plane
Divides body info superior and inferior halves (top and bottom)
Oblique Section
Cuts made diagonally
Dorsal Body Cavity
Protects nervous system and organs
Subdivisions: cranial cavity, vertebral cavity (or spinal cavity)
Ventral Body Cavity
Two subdivisions:
1) thoracic
2) abdominal pelvic
Thoracic Cavity
Surrounded by ribs and chest muscles
Has pleural cavities-surround lungs
Mediastinum-surrounds heart and other organs
(Pericardial activity-encloses heart)
Includes heart/lungs, etc
