What difference between state and a nation
nation-state and nation. The members of a nation-state share a national society and culture and a national homeland. Canada is a nation-state. Its people, the Canadians, are unified by a national government and a network of other social institutions (society), by shared ideas about and expressions of what constitutes Canadian identity (cul- ture), and by the geographical landmass of Canada itself (homeland). Palestine, by contrast, is a nation but not a nation-state. The Palestinians share a society, a culture, and a strong sense of nationhood, but they do not (as of this writing) have political autonomy over the geographical area they claim as their homeland. Palestine is thus a nation without a state.
