Ch. 1 Flashcards
Study of structures of the body visible to the naked eye.
Macroscopic Anatomy
Study of the functions of the body.
Physiology
Study of structures that can only be seen under a microscope.
Microscopic Anatomy
Study of cellular structures under a microscope
Cytology
Study of tissue samples.
Histology
All of the chemical operations going on in our bodies. Sum of anabolism and catabolism
Metabolism
Relatively stable environment of the body.
Homeostasis
A malfunction of the body resulting from failure to maintain homeostasis.
Disease
Correcting process in which the body’s response reverses the effect of a stimulus and restores homeostasis.
Negative feedback
A mechanism that magnifies or reinforces the original stimulus.
Positive feedback
Study of disease.
Pathology
Anatomical Position
Erect, face forward, feet parallel, arms at side, palms faced forward.
Supine position
Laying on your back, face upward.
Prone position
Laying on your stomach, face downward.
Fowler’s position
Sitting in bed at a 45-60 degree angle. Used in hospitals.
Plane that divides the body into top and bottom sections.
Horizontal plane
Directional term that means towards the head or upper body.
Superior
Directional term that means away from the head or toward the lower part of the body.
Inferior
Plane that divides the body into left and right halves.
Median plane
Plane that divides the body into front and back sections.
Frontal plane
Anterior
Body parts towards or on the front of the body.
Posterior
Body parts towards the back of the body.
Study of internal and external structures of the human body.
Anatomy
Large open spaces that house and protect organs.
Body cavities.
Dorsal cavity
Back of the body. Houses the brain and spinal cord.
Name the 6 digestive organs in the abdominal cavity.
Stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen.
Body cavity that is in the front of the body and contains two smaller cavities.
Ventral cavity
Nasal cavity
Space behind the nose
Buccal cavity
Space within the mouth
Orbital cavity
Houses the eyes
