CH 1 Flashcards
measurements of the human body used in comparison or design
Antrhopomorphics:
design factors intended to maximize productivity or efficiency by minimizing discomfort
Ergonomics
How a body can maneuver from a fixed position.
Range 01motion:
The range of human sizes that are accommodated within typical
structures. The number takes into account the sizes of the middle 95 percent of the
population, without the top and bottom 2.5 percent.
The 96th percentile:
a mixture of the following gases:Nitrogen: 78% Oxygen: 21% Carbon dioxide: 0.03% Water vapor Trace elements such as helium and krypton in small amounts.
air
the quantity of heat required to raise 1 pound of water 1 degree Fahrenheit in temperature.
BTU(British Thennal Unit)
a measure of the heat intensity at a point in degrees
Dry bulbtemperature
Heat transfer involved in the change of state of a substance (usually the evaporation or condensation of water, perspiration or refrigerant).
Latentheat
Burning of fuel (food) to maintain a constant body temperature.
Metabolism
the ratio of the amount of water vapor in the air at a specific
temperature to the maximum amount that the air could hold at that temperature,
expressed as a percentage.
Relative humidity
a change in the heat content of a substance that causes the substance to
change temperature (measured in BTUs).
Sensible heat
a temperature taken with a thermometer whose bulb is surrounded by a layer of wet gauze.
Wet bulb temperature
Information on plants on and around site.
Flora
Open system methods of shaping the ground to move water in a
desired direction.
Berms and swales
Refers to the amount of soil removed from site areas and added to others
during construction.
Cut and fill
2 percent for planted areas, with 3 percent minimum
recommended. The minimum slope for paved areas is 0.5 percent, with 1 percent
minimum recommended.
Grade slope minimums:
Water moving through the soil surface into the underground aquifer
Percolation
system that raises exterior studs the full wall height with floors inserted
into the frame.
balloon framing
Rounding the edges of lumber to limit splintering at the corners.
Easing
System that constructs single floor height studs with platform floors at each level before proceeding
Platform framing
Drying the sap from recently cut trees until it is at a specified moisture
conte nt.
Seasoning
Unfired mud brick masonry units.
Adobe
A leaching of salt minerals out of mortar, causing staining.
Efflorescence
