CGP P1:175-179 Flashcards
Non-renewable energy sources are… (2)
Fossil fuels and nuclear fuel
3 main fossil fuels…
Coal, oil and (natural) gas
Non-renewable means
. That they are limited (finite)
. They will run out one day
. We cant replace non-renewable energy sources as fast as we’re using them
Renewable means
. They are unlimited (infinite)
. They will never run out
. Renewable energy sources can be replenished (replaced) as quickly as they are being used
Renewable energy resources include…. (Name at least 4)
. The sun (solar)
. Wind
. Water waves
. Hydro-electricity
. Bio-fuels
. Tides
. Geothermal
What do most vehicles run on? Cars can also run on?
. Petrol
. Diesel
. Pure bio-fuel
. Mix of bio-fuel and petrol or diesel
What is petrol and diesel made from?
Oil (which is non-renewable)
Where are wind turbines usually put up?
In open spaces
How do wind turbines produce electricity? (Simple, 1 sentance)
When the wind turns the blades, electricity is produced
Do wind turbines produce pollution and are they renewable or non-renewable?
They don’t produce pollution once built, they are renewable
Do wind turbines damadge the landscape/environment
They do no permanent (lasting) damage to the landscape, if you remove the turbines, the area goes back to normal
Are wind turbines reliable?
Yes but not as reliable as other energy resources
Do wind turbines produce electricity when the wind stops?
No
What happpens to the wind turbines if the wind is too strong?
The turbines are stopped, this stops them from getting damaged
Is it possible to increase supply of electricity produced by wind turbines when there’s extra demand? (P.191) for electricity
No, its impossible
How do solar cells (solar panels) generate electricity?
They generate electricity directly from sunlight
Do solar cells create pollution when built?
No
Is energy used to build solar cells?
Quite a lot of energy is used to build them
When does solar power generate electricity
Only during the day
In what countries is solar power a very reliable source of energy?
In sunny countries
Is solar power still reliable in cloudy countries like Britain?
Yes, it’s still fairly reliable
