Cgapter 3 Flashcards
Infections, safety, first aid
Infection
A condition that results when a microbe invades the body, multiplies and causes injury or disease
Microbes
Bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses
Pathogenic
Causing or capable of causing diseases
Are called pathogens
Nonpathogenic
Microbes in our skin ( normal flora)
CDC
Centers for disease controls and prevention
Cdc
Charge with the investigantion and control of various diseases, especially those that are communicable and epidemic potential
Nosicomial infection
Traditional term applied to patient infections acquired in hospitals
HAI ( healthcare associated infection )
newer term that applies to infections furing health care delivery in all healthcare settings
The chain of infection
Infectious agent Reservoir Exit pathway Means of transmission Entry Pathway Susceptible host
Infectious agent
Aka causative agent
Is the pathogenic microbe responsible for causing an infection
Reservoir
It is a place where the microbe can survive, grow or multiply.
Exit pathway
Is a way for an infectious agent to leave a reservoir host
Means of transmission
The nenthod an infectious agent uses to travel from a reservoir to a susceptible individual
Ex. Air borne, droplet, vector, contact and vehicle
Airborne transmission
Involves dispersal infections that can remain infective for long periodsof time
( Mist )
Contact Transmissions
Direct or indirect
Direct - physical transfer
Indirect- touc contaminated objects
Droplet transmission
Spread by mouth, nose or conjunctivia of the eyes of a susceptible host
Vector transmission
Infectious agent cartied by an insect, arthropod or an animal
Vehicle transmission
Infectious agent through contaminated food.
Entry pathway
Include body openings
- eyes
- nose
- mouth
- breaks in the skin
Susceptible host
Someone with a decreased ability to resist infection
Employee Screening
An important way in whoch infection control programs prevent infection is through employee screening programs.
Employee immunization
Help keep employees from contracting and spreading infectious disease
Evaluation and Treatment
Program for employees who are exposed to infections from the job
OSHA
Mandated confidential medical evaluation, treatment, counseling and follow up. ( BBPs)
Surveillance
Involves closely watching patients and employees at risk of aquiring infections as well as collecting; evaluating and disturbing data
