6 Instrument Approaches
Hold (holding procedures & task)
Intercept and Track a course
When is an Instrument Rating Required?
1) When acting as PIC under IFR when in weather conditions less than VFR
2) When carrying passengers for compensation or hire on XC flight in excess of 50nm or at night
3) Class A airspace
4) Special VFR between sunset and sunrise
When can you log instrument time?
1) When flying as the sole manipulator of the controls in actual or simulated conditions
2) An authorized instructor may log instrument time when conducting instrument flight instruction in actual instrument flight conditions

Need an Destination Alternate “1-2-3” Rule
A destination alternate is always required unless
1) An instrument approach is published and available for the destination, AND,
For at least 1 hour before and 1 hour after ETA:
2) Ceiling will be at least 2000ft above airport elevation
3) Visibility will be at least 3SM
IFR Min Fuel Requirements
(91.167)
1) Fuel form departure to destination airport
PLUS
2) Fuel from destination to most distant alternate (if an alternate is required) PLUS
3) 45 minutes calculated at normal cruise speed
Min WX conditions required at an airport to list it as an alternate
(No instrument Approach Available at the Alt)
Ceiling & visibility must allow descent from MEA, approach and landing under VFR
Min WX conditions required at an airport to list it as an alternate
(Precision approach)
600ft ceiling and 2SM visibility
Min WX conditions required at an airport to list it as an alternate
(Non-Percision Approach)
800ft ceiling and 2SM visibility
IFR Takeoff Minimums
Prescribed T/O minimums for the runway or if none:
1-2 Engines = 1SM vis
More then to = 1/2SM vis
FPNM to FPM conversion
FPM = FPNM x Groundspeed / 60
