When is an Instrument Rating Required?

A

1) When acting as PIC under IFR when in weather conditions less than VFR
2) When carrying passengers for compensation or hire on XC flight in excess of 50nm or at night
3) Class A airspace
4) Special VFR between sunset and sunrise

Need an Destination Alternate “1-2-3” Rule

A

A destination alternate is always required unless

1) An instrument approach is published and available for the destination, AND,

For at least 1 hour before and 1 hour after ETA:
2) Ceiling will be at least 2000ft above airport elevation
3) Visibility will be at least 3SM
