Record keeping

Sign the logbook of each person to whom they have given training (flight and ground)
Maintain a record of all details of endorsements given in log book and student pilot certificate for solo
Maintain a record of all details of endorsements given for knowledge and practical tests including results
Keep these records for 3 years

8 hours in every 24 CFI must hold category and class (and type) Endorsement limitations 5 hours in make and model Initial CFI training No self endorsements
Initial CFI training

GROUND CFI cert for at least 24 months AND Given at least 40hrs of ground training -OR- At least 100hrs ground training in FAA approved course (eg 141)
FLIGHT CFI cert for at least 24 months AND Given at least 200hrs flight training -OR- Trained and endorsed at least 5 for practical test with 80% pass first attempt AND Given at least 400hrs flight training

Pass practical test
Get an additional instructor rating (CFII)
Submit application with FAA
- completed CFI refresher course
- in previous 24 months worked as company check pilot, chief airman, chief flight instructor or CFI in 121 or 135 operation
- US military instructor pilot test in last 12 months
Renewal 24 months from date of renewal unless within 3 months of expiry or previous cert then it is 24 months from date of expiry
