A

Continental GTSIO-520

19
Q

What is the turbo “critical altitude” on the Cessna 421’s Continental GTSIO-520?

A

20K feet is the Critical Altitude for the

turbocharger waste gate where it is fully closed by this altitude and above

20
Q

What do the letters in GTSIO-520 stand for?

A

GTSIO-520 stands for “Geared Turbo-Supercharged Injected Opposed 520 cubic inch”.

21
Q

What is the gear ratio in the Cessna 421’s GTSIO-520?

A

The gear reduction box mounted on the front of the block has a 1.5:1 ratio which causes the prop to
spin slower than the engine crankshaft.

22
Q

At full power, how fast are the props spinning

A

When at full RPM, the prop spins at 2235 RPM (C model only vs 2275 forA&B) while the engine is at almost 3400 RPM (3500 for A&B).

23
Q

How much oil does the GTSIO-520 have?

A

Continental 520s hold 12-13 quarts in the sump and 1 quart in the filter. 9 quarts is the minimum for
operation. Per the POH, fill to 10 quarts for up-to 3 hour flights and FULL for longer flights.

24
Q

What is the most common oil used in the GTSIO-520?

A

20W50 is a common multi-viscosity oil for these engines
