Certification Requirements (61.65)
A person who applies for an Instrument rating must:
- had at least a ppl certificate with an airplane rating suitable to the Instrument rating sought
- be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language
- receive and log ground training from an authorized Instructor
- receive a logbook or training record endorsement from an authorized Instructor certify in that the person in prepared to take the required knowledge test
- receive and log training on the areas of operation from an authorized Instructor in an aircraft, flight simulator, or night den a training
- pass the required knowledge test on the aeronautical knowledge areas
- pass the required practical test on the areas of operation necessary
Private Pilot privileges and limitations
- cannot act as pic of an aircraft canning passengers for compensation or hire
- may not pay less than the pro rate share of the operating expenses of a flight with passengers, provided expenses the involve only fuel, oil, airport expenditures, or rental fees
- may act as pic of a charitable or non-profit if the sponsorand pilot comply with the requirements of 91.146 (need 500 hours)
- may be reimbursed for aircraft operations that are directly related to searchand rescue operations.
When do you need an instrument rating?
- when acting as pic in flight conditions less than those prescribed for VR (61.3)
- an Instrument student or non-current instrument rated pilot may not act as pic, but may log pic instrument or actual time
- Flight in class A airspace
- To file an IFR flight plan
- for special VFR between sunset and sunrise (91.157).
- when carrying passengers for compensation on a xc more than 50 nm or at night (61.133).
When are you current to carry passengers? Day and night.
- To carry passengers during the day, you must have logged at least three take offs and landings. If carrying passengers at night these must be done at night AND to a full stop.
Night time definitions
- Logging night time: end of evening civil twighlight to beginning of morning civil twilight
- Nav lights (on): sunset to sunrise.
- Logging night landings: one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise.
Flight review (61.56).
- must be done in the preceding 24 calendar months (can be done with a CFI/CFII)
- must consist of a minimum one hour ground instruction and one hour right instruction.
- The review must include a review of The current general operating and flight rules of part 91, and a review of procedures and maneuvers at the discretion of the person conducting the flight review.
- must receive a new logbook endorsement to certify that the person has satisfactorily completed the review.
- can be substituted by an IPC or practical test fora new rating or certificate OR the person satisfactorily completing one or more phases of the faa sponsored pilot proficiency program.
Instrument currency (61.57)
- within The preceding 6 calendar months must log at least: 6 Instrument approaches, holding procedures, intercepting a course, tracking a course, and use of navigational systems.
Can Instrument currency be done in a simulator? Is an Instructor required?
Yes, provided that the sim is of the same category and class to bet of aircraft town and the pilot performs 6HITS under simulated Instrument conditions.
No, a Flight Instructor is not required.
If you haven’t logged 6 hits in the preceding 6 months what can you do to regain currency?
Go up with a safety pilot, it is within The next 6 months or complete an Instrument proficiency check
Safety pilot requirements (91.109)
- must hold at least a private pilot certificate in the same class and category aircraft
- must hold a current medical
- The aircraft must be equipped with dual controls
- The safety pilot must have adequate forward and side vision of The aircraft
Instrument proficiency check (61.57)
If after the additional 6 months the pilot still hasn’t regained currency, they must do an IPC. This can be done by a cfii, dpe, or other approved faa examiner. The IPC must consist of the areas of operation outlined in the ACS appendix a-12).
Can an IPC be done in a simulator?
The majority of an IOC can be done in an at as specified in the letter of authorization, however, the circling approach and landing tasks cannot be done.
First class medical
- must hold a first class medical certificate when exercising privileges pic of an ATP certificate
- under 40: good for 12 months
- over 40: good for 6 months
Second class medical
- must hold at least a second class medical certificate when exercising privileges of a commercial pilot certificate
- under 40: good for 60 months
- over 40: good for 24 months
Third class medical
- must hold at least a third class medical when exercising the privileges of a private pilot certificate
- under 40: good for 60 months
- over 40: good for 24 months
