Q

Does an a/c’s registrations certificate have an expiration date?

A

Yes; specific registration expiration dates have been established for all aircraft registered before Oct 1, 2010; these a/c require re-registration according to specific schedule, All initial a/c registrations issued on or after Oct 1, 2010 will expire 3 years after last day of month in which they were issued.

Q

What regulations apply concerning the operation of an a/c that has had alterations or repairs which may have substantially affected its operation in flight?

A

No person may operate or carry passengers in any a/c that has undergone maintenance, preventative maintenance, rebuilding, or alteration that may have appreciably changed its flight characteristics or substantially affected its operation in flight until an appropriately rated pilot w/ at least private pilot, flies the a/c, makes an operational check of maintenance performed or alteration made and logs the flight in the a/c records.

16
Q

What is an Airworthiness Certificate and how long does it remain valid?

A

issued by FAA only after a/c has been inspected and found to meet the requirements of 14 CFR Part 21, and is in condition for safe operation

  • a/c must meet requirements of original type certificate
  • must be displayed in a/c, legible for passengers or crew whenever a/c is operated
  • may be transferred w/ a/c except when sold to foreign purchaser
  • remains in effect as long as a/c receives required maintenance and its properly registered in U.S.
17
Q

What are Minimum Equipment Lists?

A

MELS, precise listing if instruments, equipment and procedures that allows an a/c to be operated under specific conditions w/ inoperative equipment

  • specific inoperative equipment document for a particular make and model a/c by serial and registration numbers
  • FAA-approved includes only items of equipment that FAA deems may be inoperative and still maintain an acceptable level of safety w/ appropriate conditions and limitations.
18
Q

What are the required maintenance inspections for aircraft?

A
  • annual inspection-within preceding 12 calendar months, only an AP mechanic with Inspection Authorization can perform inspection
  • 100-hour inspection-if carrying any person (other than crew) for hire or giving flight instruction for hire, any AP mechanic can perform
  • if for hire, must have 100hr and annual
  • if not for hire, must have annual only
19
Q

If an aircraft has been schedule of inspection every 100 hours, under what conditions may it continue to operate beyond the 100 hours without a new inspection?

A

may be exceed by no more than 10 hours while en route to place where inspection can be done. (excess time used to reach that place, must be included in computing the next 100 hrs of time in service)

20
Q

What are some of the responsibilities an a/c owner has pertaining to a/c documents, maintenance and inspections of their a/c?

A

owners must:

  • current airworthiness and registration
  • maintain a/c in airworthy condition including compliance w/ all applicable airworthiness directives
  • ensure maintenance is properly recorded
  • keep abreast of current regs concerning operation of a/c
  • notify FAA civil aviation registry immediately of any change of permanent mailing address or sale or export of a/c or of loss of citizenship
  • have current FCC radio station license if equipped w/ radios, including emergency locator transmitter, if operated outside of U.S.
21
Q

What is preventative maintenance?

A

simple or minor preservation operations and replacement of small standard parts not involving complex assembly operations

  • certificate pilots (excluding student, sport, recreations) may perform preventative maintenance on any a/c owned or operated by them provided a/c is not used in air carrier service
  • includes oil changes, wheel bearing lubrication, hydraulic fluid (brakes, landing gear system) refills
22
Q

What are Special Flight Permits and when are they necessary?

A
  • may be issued for an a/c that may not currently meet applicable airworthiness requirements but is capable of safe flight.
  • typically issued for: flying an a/c to base where repairs, alterations or maintenance are to be performed or to a point of storage; delivering or exporting an a/c; production flight testing new-production a/c; evacuating a/c from areas of impending danger; conducting customer demonstration flights in new-production a/c that have satisfactorily completed production flight tests
23
Q

How are Special Flight Permits obtained?

A

if needed, assistance and the necessary forms may be obtained from the local FSDO or Designated Airworthiness Representative (DAR)

24
Q

What are Airworthiness Directives (ADs)?

A
  • medium FAA uses to notify a/c owners and other potentially interested persons of unsafe conditions that may exist because of design defects, maintenance, or other causes, and to specify the conditions under which the product may continue to be operated
  • regulatory in nature, and compliance is mandatory
  • aircraft owner’s or operator’s responsibility to ensure compliance
  • divided into two categories: emergency nature (immediate compliance prior to further flight) less urgent nature (compliance within specified period of time)
25
Q

Are electronic flight bags (EFBs) approved for use as a replacement for paper reference material (POH and supplements, etc) in the cockpit?

A

yes; can be used during all phases of flight operations in lieu of paper reference material when the info displayed is functional equivalent of the paper reference material replaced and is current, up-to-date, and valid; recommended that secondary or back-up source of aeronautical info necessary for flight be available
